Runoffs

My how times have changed! I see that that the first place HP car in Q2 is a 2015 Toyota Yaris. I remember when new cars belonged in showroom stock, not production.

When BMC was wining SCCA races with new cars, most (if not all) of the Yari design & engineering staff were not born yet!

Curious to see if they can endure like BMC...

Um... many regard SCCA's heyday when Production was composed of exclusively new cars/models. :ask:

How about Joe Huffaker?!

A Midget absolutely crushed the FP field last year. Then Joe comes out this year and has been on the pole in two sessions in FP and in two sessions in GTL (in FP trim) at a track that no one said a Midget would be competitive at. There should be no excuse at this point if a Midget doesn't crush the field at Mid Ohio next year now.

Yeah SCCA REALLLLYYY hates those old cars...

Dentici is on GTL provisional pole with 1.2 secs on Joe.

Both cars are "old". One is just "older". ;)

And do you have any actual information that Joes car is unaltered for GTL?

Oops, I missed the 2nd session.

Just grapevine, but your grapvine is better in that class.

Other grapevine news from those who have more fingers in prod is there were some issues with front valances in EP.

Looking at the segment info and trap speed, Huffaker has a trap speed a couple mph slower than other cars but he gets it whooooed up coming off the oval and beats everyone's time through segment 1.

Pay no attention to that......

Joe is running the same car in FP and GTL. I doubt they are changing anything between the 2 classes.

They have to add weight to the "GTL car", but Tim is correct otherwise.

Anyone notice that there are only 5 cars entered in T3???

At least 4 of the 5 are qualified within .4s of each other. In really any given class, except for a few, there are really only that many people that can win.

Some classes have more, but it is essentially a one man show when you look at qualifying times....

To me (watching numbers on the internet), it looks like the FP Midget is about right for Daytona. It's slower on the straights and making up time in the corners. A guy like Joe, with top level prep and driving, should be near the front of the field. It's been appropriately adjusted for high speed tracks.

In HP, the LP British cars wouldn't stand a chance (even if more than one showed up). After all, the Yaris/CRX are running faster speeds than Huffaker's full prep 1275. Why would anyone think a LP 1275 (or Spit 1296) could be anywhere near that? I'd expect to be 10 mph off the pace. Hard to make up the difference even if I can carve corners. Brannon's Fiat seems like a decent representative for how fast an LP Brit car can be. The bottom line is that a Yaris/CRX does not race well with a roadster because they don't handle as well and have GOBS more power.

With that said, if these Touring classes can continue to exist with such small participation, then why can't we have a 4th prod class for cars like the Yaris/CRX/VWs? Why is Prod always threatened with extinction when Touring is allowed to under-perform? Add a 4th class, make tasteful changes to Prod (wings, brakes, smart engine swaps), and see what happens.

An "original" H car hasn't won the Runoffs since 2008, and that was before the current HP leader cars were even close to developed. Why do we want to race old roadsters? Because they are cheap, look cool, and are fun to drive (rwd dynamics, low CG).

Wishing I was there, but not in my Spit. Good luck to those racing!

No need for a tube chassis in GTL.

Many runoffs won by tub cars recently and .... an LBC tub car led at the last runoffs in GTL. And is provisional outside pole at the current runoffs .....

Wonder how they will handle things on Saturday with the GTL race about 2 hours after the FP race.

If he wins FP, will they pull the "FP" motor for tear down. Drop in new GTL motor and go out for GTL race.

I know a number of years cars sat in impound until the next day.
