Corps: Gavins Point Releases At 40,000 CFS By October
Published: July 29, 2011, 9:29 AM

The Army Corps of Engineers says there is a record amount of water to evacuate from the Missouri River system before winter sets in.

Friday morning, Brigadier General John R. McMahon went over details for how it will accomplish that goal. McMahon says the Corps hopes to restore the system to levels from before the 2011 flooding event and also get ready for the 2012 runoff.

To do that, the Corps plans to drop releases from Gavins Point Dam to 40,000 cubic feet per second by October. This weekend, it will lower releases from 160,000 CFS to 150,000. It will hold at that level until the middle of August when it will start being lowered by 5,000 CFS each day until it reaches 90,000 CFS by August 27.

A main focus is to get people back into their homes and get to a recovery point. The Corps also wants to drop water levels so that it can evaluate levees and dams along the river.

" ..... Corps hopes to restore the system to levels from before the 2011 flooding event and also get ready for the 2012 runoff. ..... " there was a statement from the Corp not much mentioned several months ago that next year could be worse - that the trend of the last ten years will remain with increasing amounts of water needing to be released .....
