American Racer Tires

Guys complaining about flat tires over night are complaining about old tires. I switched my customers from GY to Hoosier in 99 when GY sent their business to chile and started loosing sidewalls at high speed. I have never gone back. Like with anything fast you cant just bolt a different tire on and expect to get perfect out of the box. I have done head to head testing with GY bias and Hoosier Bias making the needed changes and the hoosier has always cut the fasted lap between the two. It took rethinking shocks, springs and setup but they are faster. Its racing and you can bet that if AR wants to have a fast tire they are going to supply fast teams testing stuff for R&D. The only thing I don't like about the rule is that Hoosier wasn't allowed to offer a comparable product to the game.

As a footnote to the AR controversy, the tires do not hold air for 12 hrs. I asked my tire mounter to figure out what was going on. I thought maybe bead leaking. He spayed soap on the sidewall and the entire sidewall leaks like a sieve.

Saves to cost of expensive tire bleeders...:) Do the math figure the bleed rate and use it to your advantage...

I ran the leaky sidewall Hoosier cantis some years back (and have a set of newer ones).
My Hoosier dealer at that time told me to paint the inside of the sidewalls with cheap dishwashing detergent and mount them while it was still wet to seal the sidewalls - worked reasonably well. At least I didn't get foamy sidewalls every time they got wet.
The newer ones still leak down but not as bat - didn't seal them.
I've had GYs stay up all winter and my GY rains are even better.
Problem is that the GY slicks are plumb wore out so I'm hoping that Hoosier radials are better.

:D No comment

I have a question - If you go onto the AR web site the 20.0 x 8 x 13 tires list a design rim size of 6 to 7". Does anyone know why they are given an 8 inch rim as an exception?

Hoosier R6s are not much better. I have some of them that stay up for weeks/months, and others that will bleed 5PSI an hour. I can't put the car in the trailer on them since I don't know if I'll be able to get it out when I get home!

It is my understanding that those tires will work for 6" to 7" wheels but will work better with 8" wheels. Since they are supposed to be an inferior tire in performance, they want to have an optimal wheel to put them on to get closer to the performance of the Hoosier.

I have no experience with them and do not know for sure if that is true.

 It is my understanding that I can drive at the allowed displacement, but I would be "better" with an increased engine displacement. Since I am an inferior driver, I would like to have a larger engine (just for me only) to put me closer to the performance of a Henry or a Prill.

I actually do have experience and know this is true

Ridiculous yes, but no more so than the AR rule

Ron - Maybe the BOD figured out that the 8" rim was the only way to stop the AR tires from leaking air through the entire sidewall...

Approved. But you can only run 9:1 compression and have to use OEM cams. and add 500lbs.

I think James is still trying to find race pads for his drum brakes..

I saw a green EP RX7 at Hallett with the AR tires. No idea who he was and didn't get a chance to talk to the guy.

Matt that's Charlie Clark. He runs KC Raceware in Kansas City. He mounts tires at SCCA events when he's there.

He's a super nice guy, good driver and clean and fun to race with to boot.

He sells the 10" wheels and the ARs. I'm told he ran them at the runoffs last year as well, but haven't spoken with him about them.
