US Majors - Buttonwillow

I'd bet money that he just didn't see you; probably still doesn't know what you're talking about.
I almost tripped over that thing walking around impound.

Brian, It sure looks like you got moved in on. I would say he had to get over to make the corner but that it not a very good excuse when you where occupying that space. I am sure he didn't do it on purpose but it happened non-the-less.

I did find some more speed but Jason has that Yaris dialed in and he is driving very well. Steve is still learning how to drive his front wheel drive car but should be well seasoned with it by the Runoffs. It looked like Gordon and I were going to have some good racing but Riverside (a very high speed sweeper) kept biting him. Cars (especially BMWs) don't do well in that corner, at the limit, when it suddenly pops out of gear. He had an off there in each race.

Having to start at the rear in the second race, because I got to pre-grid late, was not very beneficial to get a good finish. We only had about 45 minutes to get ready for the Sunday race. There were quite a few cars that got to the pre-grid late. I realize after I got home that I didn't even have time to change the left tires for the race.

Jason, Congratulations on another fine drive. I'm with Gary in that you will be tough to beat this year. In fact, ever since you dialed in the Yaris.. my car keeps breaking trying to chase after you... :D ...can't be my fault?? I'm working on my trans/clutch issues and hope to complete one more race up at PIR in May. Long haul, just to qualify for the run-offs. From the videos I've seen looks like it was a little windy with large dust clouds kicked up with off course excursions...

Thanks. Take your time repairing the car and shoot for Portland in July, from the sounds of it there will be a number of people making that trip. Added bonus, much less likely to run into a tree if you go off.

It's quite possible that he didn't see me, the car is VERY small. When I talked with him, he didn't suggest that.

Here is some video facing the back of the car (front facing video had an error "low card speed" - what's that mean? works now)
http://youtu.be/ywEWpItuxks

That video leaves a dirty taste in my mouth.. Yeah, it was obvious he was coming through, but he couldn't wait 5 sec to get around the corner and nail the gas on the next straight? That car has lots of motor and wouldn't have been a problem to get around on the next straight.
"You can't win the race in the first turn, but you can certainly lose."

Pretty aggressive move for the start of the race, even if he did think he was clear. There was nowhere for you to go even if you wanted to let him through.

As for the card speed issue, the camera has a buffer of xxxKB.. If you only record for a few seconds with a slow chip, it doesn't fill up the buffer before you stop the recording. However if you record for a while and the card is slow to write, it's possible to fill the buffer up and the camera has nowhere to dump the video. thus the error. Keep in mind that with compression algorithms, different actions on the video can use up more memory- i.e. a very busy image or a fast moving one (i.e. a car turning a corner with traffic) uses more memory than when you're videoing the wall because it has to update more pixels every frame. That's the easiest way I can think to describe it.

Brian, the "low card speed" is the speed of the CF card. If you got that error, you need a card with a higher write speed. I'll look at the 8 GB ones I have for my Chase Cam.

Careful with an 8GB card if you're using a newer GoPro. I have a 16GB card and will use 12GB on a single race recording at 960dpi and the slowest available frame rate. so I have to clear out the card between qual and race..

Not sure which camera you use, but you might want to make sure you get a minimum 16GB card if it's a new camera with high resolutions and frame rates.

I'm using RePlay XD 1080 cameras. I've used that 8gb card before, but it may have been in the older camera that was set up by Traqmate. I just tried it and recorded a very nice video of my desk so not sure what happened during the race. The cameras did shut off and restart during the races that it did record.

Traqmate has a set-up that starts and stop the camera to coincide with the data acquisition, but I haven't pulled that out of the Miata yet. Typically the races are under 8gb.

OK good stuff. just wanted to pass on what little I've learned about my GoPro in the 3 weekends I've used it so far. I will be getting a 32GB high speed card and a couple spare batteries to have ready for the thing. I can charge the battery the day before, remove it from the camera, and it'll only be 50% the next day when I'm ready to use it.

The stop/start you mentioned could also be an indicator of the slow write speed to the card. new cards aren't that expensive, and it's worth a shot to try a larger higher speed one and see what happens.

You're right. I will experiment with some new cars. I just don't understand why it worked previously.

Here is the first 3 laps from Sunday's race - nothing particularly interesting. http://youtu.be/kQALcJV0lKA

The EP race was pretty interesting. I believe that 5 different cars led at one point or another (Downey, Carroll, Royle, Qvale and eventual winner Longwell). At the start Downey led Carroll, Longwell, Gist, Qvale, me, and Royle. I think Carroll got by Downey but spun off (see about 2:17 in video above) at the end of the esses. So Carroll may not have led at S/F. Downey slowed about 5 laps into the race and Royle got around me as I was slowed by Downey. Royle easily got by both Qvale and Gist. Qvale seemed faster than Gist but couldn't overcome Gist straightaway speed to make a safe move until half way thru the race. I'm sure that someone will correct me, but I think Longwell led after Downey had his issues. Royle caught and passed him but then his RF tire started to give up (post race it was fluffy with cords showing all the way around - they weren't slicks as I recall). Not sure when Qvale led or how Longwell went back into the led, but heard that was the case. I had FINALLY got by Gist when here comes Carroll, so Gist goes back by me on the front straight to try and hold off Carroll for another lap or so.

So in the end, EP results:
1. John Longwell
2. Bruce Qvale
3. Phillip Royle
4. Josh Carroll
etc

FP
1. Linn
2. Albert Correia in a nice 914
3. Bill Okell in a Huffaker MG (the infamous Taco Bell car)

Use a 32 card in our GoPro but also have a remote button where I can turn it on as I leave the grid and turn it off after I get the flag. Doubles the time we had with the crew turning it on at the grid. Also has an indicator light so you know what you are doing with it.

Some funny stuff at the end, as I forgot to turn off my GoPro... Now I know why Steve was not at the trophy presentation.

I sleep on the floor of my enclosed trailer at away races... one night I was almost asleep when I heard some guys talking about 10-11pm. I opened the door to my trailer to see two guys on their stomachs looking under my car with a flashlight for things to protest.

Holy shit!!! Really? Folks are stooping (literally) to that kind of thing? I'd hide a hungry snake under there. And put him on a electric blanket top keep him energized. And if you go to AZ, give him a gun!

Names, we want names. Shame them into not doing that kind of lame ass crap.

I must admit that I have ulterior motives here. I want you to come to Daytona and pull me around there next year.

Certainly not the case here. I "caught" them a few minutes later, then opened the hood so they could see the rest. I also got a chance to check out his newly acquired Honda - and much like them looking at the Yaris, I had no idea what I was looking at. I just left it in the video because I though it was funny that he was over there instead of getting his trophy.

Steve has WAY too many trophies as it is. Most of them are at his dad's house in Capitola, CA

Jason, I was not there to get my trophy either. However, I was too quick to get caught on your video when I was looking for your secrets. Now, I need to learn how to use that quickness on the track to keep up with you.
