Thunderhill Majors

Mike - Was your improvement in lap times based on your switch from the 948 to the 1275, or did you already have that last year?

Ron, I am very sure Mike unveiled his 1275 at the Runoffs in 2014. He is usually pretty fast at Thunderhill but the 1275 power helped him a lot.

I am not answering for Mike but he doesn't come on here a lot so I offered a quick brief reply.

I believe that Mike had the 1275 @ the run-offs, but they were still dialing it in. He definitely had the 948 at the April TH Major in 2014

Wish I was there racing with you guys, TH is still my favorite track. I have seen Mike do 2:08's before... as long as he can keep the oil and H20 in his motor... he can be formidable in his Sprite. ButtonWillow looks like a good HP crowd.... Let's see if Brian can hold off the Yaris brigade in the CRX. I'm fixing my transmission which let go at NOLA last month.... One of these days I'll get my act together...

Tim, It is a Huffaker engine, what's to dial in? Mike was definitely sporting the 1275 at the Runoffs. He was probably still dialing himself in with that new found power.

The answer to the question of the motor is that I did have the 1275 in at the Runoffs. I didn't make any changes to that part of the car for Thunderhill. What I did find was a problem with the front suspension that was a big problem at Chuckwalla. With that corrected things worked much better. I also have been having with my glasses. Part way through a race things would start to blur. My new glasses are distance only and that solved the problem. I do not spend much time reading in the car so distance only isn't a problem. I still am learning how to drive a limited prep engine. I have to learn where the power is. More things to learn.

My blended bi-focals work well, to see the gauges, as well as to see the track. Getting old sucks, but the bottom of the lenses (farsighted) are just glass. That may change in a few years.

I'm only 55, so I've still got a few more years left, before I get tired of doing everything myself. Just getting everything in the trailer is taking about 1.5 hours.

Getting old sucks

Before I had my eyes fixed, I raced with the old style "executive" bi-focals. I found that w/no line bi-focals I had to physically move my head to see the gauges or to see clearly other than distant straight ahead. Executive bi-focals have the same perscription all the way across the full width of the upper and lower lenz. Great for racing with no distortion when you move your eyes. They do not do much for vanity but really work great for racing. I would sit in my car and mark where I wanted the line to be....not where the technician says it should be. I would place the line just above the gauges. Just my input for what it is worth. B

Yes, Mike - I knew that you had the 1275 in for the Runoffs but was wondering if you had it in for last year's Thunderhill. Apparently not. It does take a little getting used to the fact that the LP 1275 doesn't make any power above about 7,000 whereas you probably used to shift at 8500 with the 948, but it should not take long.

We had tweaked our 948 to the point where there wasn't as much to be gained by going to the 1275 other than reliability, but in your case it seems to be a dramatic difference. Having good reliable power and more low-end torque has made racing an LBC much more enjoyable for me, even though we are down from where we need to be to keep up with the front-running tin-tops. Not having to adjust the valves after every run and getting more than 4 hours between rebuilds is kinda nice.
