Okay, going back to NAPA to do an exchange. The pn 17155 crosses to NAPA numbers 2446380, 2446222 and 2446116. The 2446116 is the one that is readily available. The others are some sort of special order part.
I am using the Isuzu trooper starter 16878 on my vintage racer and yes some modification was required. My concern is that this modification using the BFH precision tool will be illegal under the SCCA GCR.
Thoughts? Comments?

Dunno where the 17155 came from, but when I put in 16878 and click on the "Interchange" button on the NAPA website I get 2446222.

No idea on the whether the modification is legal or not. I only race vintage, where anything you can't see from 10 feet away is legal.

I will have to pick up one of these Napa starters to check against, but I have more than one adapter for a 1275 and iirc, the housings they fit were incompatible. The problem with the Isuzu and the Acura starters is that the soleniod is integral to the housing. If that goes, you are outta luck.

Thanks for reporting back! So, you're telling us that it is a direct bolt-in with no clearance issues on the firewall? Where does the power connect? On the top or underneath? Can you provide a pic of the installed starter?

David - sorry to take so long. Fits perfectly, no clearance issues. Power attaches on the bottom of the starter which is a bummer. I.ll get a picture next time I am in the shop. EZ

Bolts right up. I cannot get the picture to load ... Arrrgh! Email me at ezanner@gmail.com and I'll sent it to you. I have the other Isuzu starter on the vintage car and it did require a reorg of the corner of the tub nearest the starter.

Thanks for the GIANT pics, Eric! :D

Looks like it is still a pretty tight fit. I think I'd want to get the BFH out and create a little clearance.

Sorry about the big pics....way too much technology...there is an eighth of an inch of space in there.
