Now is as good a time as any to start our thread for this week. Overnight rain at RA and still on and off rain less than an hour before grid. The rain started at the tail end of Friday test sessions. Does not look like todays time will show anyone's hand for this week unless it also rains on Sunday.

Looks like a wet one. The HP drivers can thank Greg Gauper, as he was the fastest in the session (faster than the FP guys). I think that means HP will go out before the FP cars on Tues.
The live T&S did not sort based on fast lap

HP 15 Greg Gauper 03:10.5
HP 2 Matt Brannon 03:16.2
HP 3 Chris Albin 03:22.6
HP 9 Tom Broring 03:23.9
HP 4 Ron Bartell 03:28.7
HP 27 Bob Eichelberger 03:37.8
HP 16 A. L. (Tony) Drum 03:38.8
HP 32 Mike Cummings 03:42.5
HP 75 Jack Schulz 03:47.0
HP 41 Robert (Rocky) Entriken 03:50.1
HP 17 Keith Church 03:56.1
HP 81 Jerry Oleson 04:09.3

I saw the Chief Steward Jim Rogaski and he said he said he's got a bit of a dilemma with this one. I wouldn't be surprised if he exercises Chief Steward authority and puts FP out first but I don't think he's decided that. You're right Brian, Greg and Matt did a real good job. I actually thought about this as I pointed Greg by (he was cookin!).

HP Qual 2-
Tin top haven, Moser easily on top, doing his best Sargis imitation. The fast 'original HP' cars (Brannon, Bartell) are 6 sec off the pace in 5th and 6th. The Yaris in 7th followed by the Mini. Spridgets in 9th-12th place. Good to see Tony Drum's name back on a Runoffs sheet. Jamie Blust should be out on the track tomorrow - damn work commitments keeping him away.

in '09 Dan Meller qualified the HP Honda at a 2:40.4 - before it was awarded it's lead trophy(trophies). I imagine that they have improved the car a bit and Moser is more comfortable. Last year Moser qualified that car at 2:42.82, so he has actually improved 1.358 sec. Maybe he got a tow from a FP car.

A 2:29 for a FP car? that's crazy - that is a good EP time. We'll probably see it tomorrow...

a couple of internet trolls wishing that they were at the Runoffs, but instead sitting behind their computers trying to cause trouble...

Like you guys, I am forced to watch the sessions from my dorm room. I did get a report that dad is having a bit of a technical problem. He is flying to Washington state as we speak for a work commitment. He will be returning to the track Thursday afternoon. Hopefully by then the boys can have the car running better for him.

Leaving Thursday evening for Wisconsin, and ready to see some exciting production racing this year!

HP qual 4 - cool, in the 50's
Moser again sat this one out knowing that he has a reserved spot on the grid. Because of the cooler air, most took 6-7 laps before they set their fast lap. Blust and Bartell did theirs on the 2nd lap, and did no more. Chris Albin returned to show that he still has the speed. Gary Wittman made a jump up on the sheet on his 10th and final lap to start 9th.

The only reason Moser is not there is because he needs to make a living. Nothing more, nothing less. He is at his automotive shop repairing cars.

Great job Mike with the added 275 pounds.

Kudos to Mike ; setting the pole, being a "workin' stiff" and certainly impersonating the fox in sunday's race.
Wish I could be there, recovering from acute Sinusitus.
Good luck to all participants and see you next season.

Wow!

It still hasn't sunk in yet. Thank you to all for the congrats.
That was the toughest race I have ever driven in my life.
My stomach was in knots this morning trying to guess on tires.
From what I learned on Monday, I thought that it would be too dry for full rains. Normally all I run is either a full wet or full dry setup.
Yesterday I decided to hedge my bets and get a set of hand grooved slicks for my fronts to act as intermediates.
Unfortunately all I have is six good rims for my slicks so I was not able to get a set of grooved tires mounted for my rears. (I still had four slicks mounted up in case it was dry... and the forecast was only 40% chance for rain).

My plan was to alter my line and driving style to deal with the slicks on the rear. Instead of being able to charge the corners like I did in qualifying on Monday, I would have to drive with an egg under the brake pedal to keep the rears from locking up, and my plan was to tippy-toe thru the corners and then punch the throttle on corner exit.

On the start I lost 2 spots while I sorted things out and came under a lot of pressure from Rogerson and Isley early as I felt out the track with the new setup.
Then I put my head down and drove my butt off. While my setup hurt me on the front half of the track, the car was on rails on the back half, especially the carousel. I gradually picked off cars one at a time until I got up to Mike and really put the pressure on and squeaked by in the carousel.
I was expecting a challenge from Mike, but he had transmission issues and lost it in 12 while trying to grab a gear. I could not relax as I still had Gagliardi keeping the pressure on me big time. Dick was also on grooved slicks but had them on all four wheels. He would nibble away at my lead on the front half but I was always able to open the gap on the back half, which allowed my to tippy-toe around to keep the car on track. My one close call was going into 12 with an oil flag and a yellow displayed, but I could not tell where in the line the oil was. I was coming up on Drum and took a conservative line under braking, still trying to figure out where the oil was. Unfortunately Drum found it for me and spun and tagged the wall under braking. For the rest of the race turn 12 was slicker than snail snot due to the combination of oil and water on the track.
The second half of the race was the hardest mentally. No mistakes...stay smooth...egg under the brake pedal...watch the gap to Gagliardi shrink & grow each lap. I was never so happy to see a checker.

My wife Tracey & I have been going thru about a million e-mails since we got home.
Thank you everybody for all the congrats!
A big thank you to Jim Dentici, Bob Clark, Mark & Dan Meller for the help in impound with the tear down.
Working on getting my video posted up on You-tube. The first 4 laps are quite entertaining.

I still can't believe it!
Greg
