Runoffs F Production 2011

Congratulations to Steve for winning with the Spit 1500. This is the first Runoffs win since 1980 (thanks SCCA Media Guide) for a Spit 1500. This is so long ago; it’s when these cars were still new!

Congrats to the podium finishes Eric and Charlie as well. They showed the Miata has a lot of go! And with the Miata finishing 2,3,4,6, etc. it still shows it’s one of the LP cars to have.

I would like to mention the good battle Dieter had with Joe Walker and Scott Lunder. These guys ran very close and hard for the first half of the race. They swapped positions several times a lap early on but were very aware of each other.

The Civic of Lunder has good potential considering he already finished 7th in his first Runoffs and it held its own under braking against the Lotus and Spit, two of the better braking cars, not to mention running his best lap time of the week while battling in the early stages of the race.

Unfortunately, on lap 5, with Dieter leading the pack, the throttle shaft broke (butterfly detached from the shaft) going into turn 8. With the throttle stuck wide open at that point in turn 8 he went off track but luckily with the extra asphalt off the outside of the turn, the car came back under control quickly. He limped the car around the remainder of the lap and pulled in leaving the battle of Lunder, Bramlage and Walker.

Ironically, Chris Patrick’s Spitfire 1500 also broke its throttle shaft on the last lap of the race.

Finally looked at the video. First 9 laps. Last 4 were lonely. Fun race. Probably more mistakes in this one than the last 2 (2010 crash aside). Oh well. Next year!

- Were you in first on that start? I was in fourth! Amazing how different the gear boxes are.
- 116 through the kink? Wow. No wonder you guys were absolutely freaking murdering me from 8 to Canada Corner.
- Sorry about the smoke. After three hard seasons, that engine is officially retiring this winter.
- My brake lights flickering all the damn time is really annoying.
- That 2:32.30 was a thing of beauty. Absolutely no draft either - just awesome cornering speed. I ran my best lap on that lap too, which was a little depressing after realizing how much you had pulled me during it. Then the coil-pack went belly-up.

The Barrington performance box has 4 "on track" gears in positions 1-4 on the H. Pit gear and reverse are in the far right gate. So technically, I was in the 2nd forward gear, shifting to 3rd as we came up the hill.

And that speed carries all the way to Canada... :) I was 2 mph up from last year entering Canada Corner while by myself. Ken was very good through the Carousel and Kink as well. Maybe Steve can post his? :)

Thank you!

Wondered about that.

Thanks! Like I found with the Lotus, a draft helps you go down the straights faster but you end up compromising in the corners in a pack. Also, the gearing wasn't quite right in the box, so when I was by myself I could try to carry more mid-corner speed and not bog as much. Turn 1 was tough with that trans. Really between gears and when I'd go down 2, I would overslow but have nice power out. Same in 6 and 12. You guys were killing me in 6. That 32.3 was pretty close to my theoretical.

Not once did I stay above 110 through the kink. Ugh, so bad.

My best lap was not. Section times were all over the place.

Eric, not sure what you want me to post. I only have a simple data aquisition system. Watching your video, I would say, based on my data, I was around 4mph slower going into Canada corner but faster going into the kink. I seem to scrub off more speed through the kink than you do.
I sure can't use the rumble strips like you do on the outside exit of the corners, not for long anyway.

Steve-
My comment about posting was more about video. I'd love to see you "in the office" and what its like on board. Cool thing about FP is that each car has different strengths.

I would have guessed you entering the Kink faster as I know you get to the throttle faster in the Carousel. The Lotus used to lose about 4-5mph in the kink even the few occasions I flat-footed it. I figured it had too much bind in the diff. Changed that for 2010 but I never drove the car at Road America.

I have an os giken diff in the miata and did in Marks car too. It is very free in the kink.

I suspect the Miata may have a little on you on top end but you probably have a bit more grunt out of slower turns.

Congrats again. Great week--especially those duplicate 31.9s. Suspect that's all she had that day to run two identical laps to the thousandth for the pole!

F production drivers that have never did a close race follow to or with SuperMan do not know the on track consistencies this MAN has. I haven't either but the info comes directly off track out of the seat from another pretty fair driver that has. I'm told in simple terms, consistant, same, same, never makes an error.

Huh? David you need another cup of Coffee!

C-mon Eric - You don't expect Dave to be coherent do you? :p

Not only do I get a shot from the corn plains , but also from a cheese lander. :moon:

Eric, when you get close enough to race SuperMan the entire race switching positions then you'll enderstand. Sort of like when the two of you may alternate doing this during an entire race. "bananabehind: I've only watched, but it's great. :applause:

Mark, you DON'T want to hear about the first class SM build during it's first race. :( Because of a BUTTTTT head from behind doesn't know what the middle pedal is for at the green flag when a car two rows ahead get's punted/turned 90* perpendicular to the track before the flag stand. Hey, the behind dude is fast, he just doesn't have vision nor is his vision connected to his brain which also is not connected to his middle pedal foot. Yes guys I know where to find sympathy, between $hit & syphilis in the dictionary. :boohoo:

With my Fiesta, all I can do is smile and wave as you lap me. "Just smile and wave boys, smile and wave."
