OVR Autumn Classic XXXIII 30th/31st Aug

For some reason, race monitor is now charging for ALL live timing. A yearly subscription is $4.99 so it's not bad, but they never announced the change...

What I meant was that there's no feed for us to 'watch' out here. The T&S feed still needs to be fed to Race Monitor for us to see it. And apparently OVR isn't doing that.

Gotcha.

The first two laps were interesting, with Aaron on the front row and two EP and FP cars in the second row. The EP RX7 was drifting over to get by Aaron, and pushed the Opel further inside, while I was attempting a pass going into one. Saw the Opel jerk the wheel twice to avoid being hit and I backed out, thinking he and the Mazda made contact. That led to getting freight trained by the rest of the field and being DFL going up into the keyhole.

On lap two, an FP miata lost his motor and dumped oil everywhere in turn one before coming to a dead stop right in the line on the exit of the turn. Joe spun in the oil and Marnie did a great job at not T-boning him as she was right on his bumper going into the turn. Looked really close from my view and it could have been nasty. I went wide to avoid the spinning cars only to see the miata stopped right in my line. I drove it off the outside of the track and came back on once clear, cracking my rear flare in the process.

The last 11 laps were uneventful, as Aaron ran away in H. Alderson in F. Pintaric in GTL and Helm in EP. I had some fun working my way through the field and ended up getting back to my starting spot of 5th overall, 2nd in HP. Took 1.5 seconds off my best time ever at the track in the process!

FYI - this event was indeed on Race Monitor, it just didn't come up under the SCCA tab for some reason.

It's not in the event results section either...where'd you find it? I'd like to see what happened today. I was told Aaron broke and wanted to see the results from today's two races.

Dayle - it was showing on my iPhone. Try searching for "OVR autumn classic" or "mid-Ohio" (with the hyphen)

Will try and post video of Q1 and Race 1 tomorrow.

Was a good weekend until sunday morning.

Qualifying 1 was good with relatively clean track, but it was slick, couple really nice slides as I was working the car out. Can't remember what I turned, it was bad, but not great.

Race 1 - started outside row 1 with Helm on pole. I knew I was a sitting duck with all the cars around me having about double the horsepower of the ReK Racing/Rascal Racing Spitfire, but damn it felt good to see almost the entire field behind me. Helm led the field to the green REALLY REALLY Slowly...I think about 3500 rpm for me in first at which point I knew it was going to be worse than I thought. We went and prelude and the opel got me in 1, I got the prelude back but then had to get by the opel which was easier said than done. certainly in a straight line that car is fast! I think it took 3 or 4 laps, in the middle of the Pintaric came through and got me and the opel...once I got the opel I just tried to put together good consistent laps. Put in a 1:44.3 (still need to find a second). Was running consistent 44/45's and I caught Helm and made the pass which he let go pretty easy. After that I was turning 44's the rest of the race...The hoosier radials were the same at lap 13 as they were at the start.

Qualifying Race - the weather was iffy. I chose to go out on rains, Pintaric chose to stay in the paddock. I started on Pole which was a pretty cool feeling. I knew the MR2 would get me on the start...and he made the right decision on tires so I had nothing for him. This was on the Pro course with no chicane. Rains turned out to be the WRONG decision. I figure I might as well burn them up. Turned 48's on the rain tires as there was no grip...pretty much 4 wheel slides every where. Then on Lap 6 KERBLAM-0. Looks like #4 exhaust valve decided the head and the stem wanted to part ways. game over.

it was fun...see you all next year!

I don't know Aaron - didn't look too bad to me. Some nice saves. A low 44 with the chicane is a good time. Nice job. What motor/prep level do you run?

That is a limited prep 1500 motor. Well it was a 1500 motor!

Thanks Ron. The track was really greasy. But I am also getting comfortable driving the radials in a slide. I need to be able to crack of a couple 43's to hang with guys like you.

I was lucky to get to the track at all. On Friday, 15 minutes from the track heading down 71, my van went into first gear and stayed there. We limped into Mansfield after 5:00 on the Friday of a long weekend looking for a transmission shop. The only thing still open was a GMC dealer and they couldn't look at it. We stayed in Mansfield and went to the one tranny shop that had Saturday morning hours, first thing. The owner, who was just coming in to pick up a vehicle, heard our story, knew exactly what the problem was and said to pull it into the shop and take a small cover off the right side of the tranny and pull out the governor. He replaced a small plastic gear that had worn like an apple core and I put it back. He wouldn't take any money and told my son "I know that it will work, now go racing with your dad. I'm a racer too." Amazing guy.

The van shifted like new and we got through registration, tech and unloading the car just as group 6 was called. The first session was kind of a mess, but given the circumstances I was just happy to be there.

Race one was exciting with the spin and seeing Marnie's front bumper up close. I had a great side by side race with Mike Sestil in the Sunday morning race, made an awesome start in race 4 briefly taking the EP Prelude into turn one. Mike and Marnie both turned faster laps passing me and putting things into the correct order. I worked on not braking into turns 1 and 11 but still have a ways to go at M-O.

So what's the name of the shop? He was nice enough to 'pay it forward' to you and we should know the name of the place in case we can give him some business in return.

Aaron, thanks for being patient with me through the twisties ... once I let you go by at the top of the back straight, my race after that was pretty boring. Although I knew I was holding you up through the turns, it wasn't my intent ... for sure, if you had been in a race in your class, I would have let you go on the first lap after the back straight when it became obvious you were faster through the turns. Thanks for a few laps of fun ...

The Opel is about as good through the turns as it will get until I get rid of the remaining bump steer and lower the ride height (need to raise the steering rack ... I currently have 5 1/2 inches of spacers on the tie rods and it's not enough, but no more spacers, I'm not comfortable with what I have.) Once I get the suspension right, I'll switch to radials ... my car is a solid axle car, so I don't know if radials will be more headaches or an improvement. BTW ... I had 8-9 heat cycles on tires used in the race. Other than that ... the car handled great on the straights ...
