Daytona Flat Tow Damage

David... Call or e-mail Eric Prill. SCCA has insurance for every event and it might just cover tow damage. As for the field being partially filled with drivers who "just want to be there", I talked to a ton of drivers who knew they were mid-pack or more who were having the time of their life without getting in the way of the "serious" contenders. I may have missed something in all this but I thought this club was about good racing and good fun. It certainly looked like it at Daytona.

I guess that I will defend the "just want to be there" guys.

IMO there have always been 3 or 4 guys who have a "realistic" chance of winning the Big Dance. In a few classes there are more cars that are competitive (EP and FP seem to traditionally have 5 or 6 and I'm sure that there are some Formula Classes or maybe T-whatever that change the dynamic a bit).

Please don't minimize the fellow competitors that have made the commitment that it takes to get there to be a part of the show, even though they may not be the ones that will run in the lead draft for the entire race. They have committed all that they can to their program in a given year. Everyone that does this is a "racer" and will do the best that they can. For various reasons some of them look like "less than serious" competitors to some of you who have "Big Rigs" and designer engines or 25+ years of development in the car that you run. Some are just starting off on their journey and some don't have the income level that permits them as many sets of new tires as they would like. They are all Club Racers that want to be a part of the Championship Weekend for their own reasons. As long as they are not dangerous on the track they belong there as much as any other racer who pays the entry fee.

rob,

in case there's any lack of clarity in my position when i answered the '20-80' comment, I was in no way disparaging the guys who have less opportunity to run up front. I was actually supporting your position by telling what is the absolute truth. Without ALL the drivers who run the runoffs, none of us would get to compete. The economics just wouldn't work for one, and for another its much more satisfying to run in bigger fields.

many of us look back fondly to the days when you had to finish top3 or 5 in div to even get an invite. that was a thrill. Those were also the days of big fields in almost all classes. Those circumstances no longer exist for all but a handful of classes and the trend is not showing a return anytime soon. so we must balance between participation and performance in determining runoffs eligibility.

as a guy who definitely had to climb the competitive 'ladder', I not only know the drill but wouldn't pass up all the great times and people along the journey! cheers...
