Wiring a one wire alternator to the master switch

OK, I know this sounds like a dumb question, but can you use a standard master switch (non alternator) and wire though the switch to kill the alternator? I've heard it will damage the alternator. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

If you wire the alternator "through" the kill switch, then the alternator will continue to power your car after you turn off the kill switch. The kill switch disconnects the battery, but not the alternator - so the car just keeps running - taking power from the alternator instead.

If you wire the alternator around to the other side of the kill switch (or directly to the battery - same thing) then you will have a constantly-hot wire from the battery to your engine compartment. While this "works," you have no way to disconnect the battery if that alternator wire gets grounded. Working on the alternator gets interesting too - when you forget to disconnect the battery - not that I ever have :)

As one of the few folks running an alternator, I'd strongly recommend getting the right switch, sorry.
 
I have the power supply to my ems hooked to the master switch, turn it off and you turn off the power to the ems and the engine quits, of course this only works if your car has a brain. :ask:

OK, I gave up trying to be cheap and ordered the correct switch. Thanks to all that commented with helpful suggestions.
