UPSIDE DOWN SHOCKS

Can I invert (body up, shaft down) my single adjustable coil over Spax shocks? These are about 10 year old (rebuilt) aluminum body units.

Thanks, Clark

Clark, the ones for the Spit and GT6 I have seen are adjustable gas shocks. Gas shocks should be more flexible than non, but the adjuster location comes into play. Maybe you should contact Spax with your model number.

Clark... Been running our Sprite rear coil overs inverted since the mid 90's because of limited clearance. Works just fine... just be sure you've got good free play side to side on the rod ends.

Thanks guys - found out my Spax are gas bagged so should be OK inverted. Got them installed now to provide more bump and less droop and they stand up straighter now than before which I like as it improves the wheel rate.

I am reassembling the front suspension on MGB after a 10+ year hiatus (and no assembly manual). Saw the above note about "good free play side to side on the rod ends." The lower attachment point on the MGB (mine has modified control arms) seems to "pinch" the lower mounting point on the Armstrong shock. It looks like I have the ability to change this to allow for some side to side "free play". Is this desired?

I assume the idea is to let the shock just be a "shock" and not add any additional (interference fit) frictional forces into the equation?

Rick... Some of the coilovers we have worked with have pretty wide rod ends on them that on some cars, particularly those with lower control arms, that using the original shock mounting doesn't leave enough room for the control arm movement without binding. Putting the shock in without the spring and moving the control arm through it's full travel will tell you if you have clearance. Things like putting a shim on one side to move the rod end over etc. will cure most situations. Sounds like a fun project.
