Summit Point Majors

Gorgeous weather here at Summit Point. What a cool track - first time here. Wish it was closer to home - I'd like to race here some day.

Saturday grid was a mix of E, F and GTL leaders at the front.
Dryden (E) - 21.0
Hinkle (F) - 21.2
Leigh (E) - 21.3
Lentz (GTL) - 21.4
Disque (GTL) - 21.4
Montague (GTL) - 22.0
Nesbit (F) - 24.0
Rolfe (E) - 24.4
Floyd (GTL) - 27.4
Broring (H) - 27.6
Fuller (GTL) - 27.8
Leitner (E) 28.3
Walsh (E) - 28.3
Christensen (H) - 28.4
Pitts (H) - 29.4
Scurria (F) - 30.3
Macqueen (H) - 30.6
Church (H) 32.0
Funk (HO) 33.8
Saltanis (GTL) 40.1

Kind of a rough race. Hinkle didn't make the grid (never did hear why). Nesbit lost his hood as he pulled out of the pits. I was sitting in timing and an off duty starter ran out to pick up the hood. Ken backed up and pulled into the cut out between Pit out and the start stand. Several people tried to fasten the hood to no avail. Ken turned around and took the green shortly after the rest of the pack.

Leigh led the first part of the race before Dryden got by. The GTL battle was nose-to-tail between Bobby and Kyle. Christensen got around Broring for the H lead. With about 10 to go, Christensen blew up going into the last corner. There was a little fire and the track was oiled down (at least Nesbit spun if not others) so the black was brought out to clean up. It was lengthy. Maybe 20 minutes (that's a guess) and the stewards stopped the clock. After the restart, something happened to Broring and that put Pitts into the lead of H. Dryden, Lentz, Nesbit and Pitts were the winners. I'll see if I can find out a little bit more info.

Eric, thanks for posting an update and glad you were able to visit Summit Point.

There were alot of incidents this weekend in all the classes that required cleanup and tows that affected the schedule. With Prod/GTL the last race group and with some schedule delays, we all wanted to just get Saturday over with. Jerry Hinkle qualified his FP Lotus over 1 second below the FP track record on Friday, but ran over a driveshaft that fell off another car. His bellhousing and other parts were broken and he had to pack up without racing. Saturday's race included a thourough oiling of the fast turn 10 about halfway through the race. Christensen's Honda pulled off clear of the track with a blown oil filter then a little while later cought the grass on fire. There was a full course yellow followed by a 10 minute black flag. The tower chose to stop the race clock for the black flag so we had the full race time-thus we had a 7 lap sprint to finish the race. Unfortunately while leading HP, my crankshaft decided 46 years was enough and broke 3 laps from the checker. Pitts took the HP win.

Sunday was actually worse for lengthy cleanup for other race groups than Saturday causing schedule delays. Not sure why, but attrition was a major factor. 3 cars including mine were DNS. 5 cars broke or pulled off including Christensen while leading HP. Others were linping and or smoking to the finish. While leading but with his transmission stuck in 5th, Tim Pitts came together with Keith Church and both went off in the gravel trap. Mike Macqueen, a local regional racer, took his first Majors win in HP. There was close racing in all the classes at various points.

While the small bore group was well behaved with minimal contact, alot of the race groups were tearing up each other's cars. I guess alot of the large budget racers who dont have to fix their own cars have a different attitude. Not sure how the Majors format affects this, but Summit regularly holds even larger regional fields with a fraction of the contact we saw this weekend.

Thanks, I was actually well past Pitts before Keith Church collected him. Still not quite sure why that happened, Keith dropped his driveshaft on the track Firday afternoon qual session, lost his gearbox and other stuff in the wild thrashing. It was not to meet Tim and reacquaint with some other H racers, all really nice people. I had lots of head-scratching with the radials, I think I have a basic set-up to work with now. Won't be at VIR this coming weekend because of wife's retirement event - have fun.

BTW I don't mean to imply that it was anything other than a blind pig - acorn win. Raced better Saturday when Tim a d I went at it close on the final lap, not knowing Tom's crank had gone away on him.

IIRC, that's at least the second time Jerry has gone under that record in qualifying, just to not be able to make the race and back it up for some freak reason. He hauls there, but seriously no luck.

Hinkle is a living monument, I knew him back in the day when he was driving a FP midget prepared by the world's worst procrastinator, Forrest Black, out of Ann Arbor MI. That Lotus is one developed car, and age hasn't slowed Jerry a step.

Here is my video from the Sunday race. What a blast. Bobby raced me very hard and very clean, as always. His pass in 6a/6b was one of legend! :notworthy:

I had a rear facing camera and may try to edit together some "coverage".

Full race report and Saturday video to come later.

Apologies to all the Production and Lites guys for oiling down the track on Saturday. Not sure if the oil filter got loose or if it blew out the seal. Going back to stock Honda filters from now on. I was amazed how fast an Accusump can unload in such a short period of time. It puked it's contents directly on the collector and I was lucky it not flare up more than it did.

Although we thought we had not damaged the engine on Saturday, I guess we did as on lap 5 on Sunday, I felt the engine tighten up and then expire at the top of three. Fortunately, we did not ventilate the block.

Was nice being back home after a 20+ year absence from Summit Point. Many thanks to all the DC Region workers for all the help, especially at those at turn 10. On Sunday, one of the spectators in the carrousel gave me a cold water while I waited for the wrecker. That is Summit Point.

Are you talking about going back to OEM oil filters, if so I have about 20-30 of them

So a socialist miata that likely cost more than any car in the small bore field, was 4+ seconds slower, and had no real competition all weekend was a good thing? The staggering number of SMs that cam in on a roll back at Summit that weekend was also sad.

Props to Tyler though. His runs through 3 and 10 were inspiring. Looks like hes WOT and just left foot braking.

Cool helmet cam too. For sure Tyler put on a clinic, but I continue to be unimpressed by SM as a class. Runaway winner and TONS of damage.

How much was Bobby's engine rebuild + chassis restoration this off season?

A close finish is a close finish. I'd share it even if it was a F500.

You did great, too Kyle! I'll see you this weekend..
