Street Differential confusion

This is not a race question but the knowledge lies in this group so I figured post my problem
I am confused a little regarding a note on the Moss page regarding differential parts.
I have a Street 60 Bugeye with the 1/4 elliptical rear end. Have been running the same 4.22 diff since I have owned the car (long time)
Car was pretty well ignored for the last 20 plus years while I played with FP Spridget
I have a 3.9 diff that I want to use with a new 1275 motor but it needs an overhaul as the carrier spider gear shims are shot. I have a good carrier from a diff that was laying around.
The preload on the pinion was OK so I figured to just change the crown wheel to the other carrier ( Yes I know backlash shimming and such)
I go to the Moss Page to order new bearings for the carrier. I notice that there is a big statement that gear sets that Moss sells cannot be used in the old axle housing (1/4 eliptic)
I am confused as to what they are talking about. Am I going to run into issues trying to put a new 3.9 carrier into a Bugeye Rear end??
Can any one fill me in?

I believe that there are small and large pinion bearing pinion shafts diameters and I suppose related carrier housings for 4.22 Sprite rear ends. Talk to Harold Flescher, Randy Canfield, Ron Sorenson, Mike Miller (Comptune), Bill Dierker (good luck contacting him), etc. for precise details.

I know that Harold has knowledge here as some time ago I tried to sell him a 4.22 ring and pinion for his F car.....mine was a small pinion shaft, he needed a large to fit his housing.

I still have that "as new" small diameter ring and pinion if you end up needing one

Good Luck, Jay

Thanks
I know the carriers are different as you say small and large bearing pinion/bearing.
My issue was sticking the later model diff pumpkin (no drain plug) into 1/4 elliptic axle.

Joe,

I don't think there is a problem fitting a late model pumpkin into a quarter elliptic axle. Axle has both a drain plug and fill plug. At least it works on our HP MK-I.

I have only seen the drain plug in the Spridget axle housing. I do have a pumpkin that does not have a fill plug or hole. That makes it a little difficult to fill since the fill plug on the axle housing is covered by something.

I have used many different types of pumpkins with my 1/4 elliptical axle.

Thanks for the confirmation that any diff will go into the early 1/4 elliptical axle housing.
Regarding the fill plug, On the early diff housing there is an additional plug along the right side of the carrier.
My original 4.22 has this additional plug. All the later carriers do not have the plug.
I am not sure what this plug was orig for as the Axel has a fill and drain plug.
Probably left over from some application in the 1950s (or 40s)
