Six speed transmission

I read somewhere that people are using a Miata 6 speed for F/P Miata racing. From what I read they are blocking off 1st. gear and using 2nd thur 6th gears `. My question is how are they blocking off 1st. gear?

Not sure of the solution that others have used for that particular application, but it is simple enough to block out first gear.

I did it after installing the ford escort 5 speed box, I am allowed 4 gears.

There are 4 studs and nuts holding the gear lever assembly to the floor. I bolted a little block assembly to the front two studs, the linkage block is just a few pieces of L shape steel welded together so the lever can't go into first. Fairly simple to make. After making the piece that bolts to the floor, then weld a vertical piece to that, then another piece the the verical part to block the lever.

I would take the time to make a picture of mine, but it is not to pretty, it does work though.

The key is to make it "permanent", or at least not easily removable. I looked at a FP MGB several years ago that had a Datsun 5-speed installed. The lock out feature was pinned in place (and I thought at the time could easily be removed while driving). Not sure it would have passed tech.

Well it can be handy to remove the block out feature to drive it onto the trailer.

Some sort of quick release pin arrangement will look to easy to remove, like it could then be used on the track.

First gear in my set-up would be way to low a gear for use on the track, but the rules say 4 gears, and the easy way to fit within the rules is to just block the linkage from being able to go into first. Second gear use is a rare event....

If I loosen the two nuts holding the block out, I can then use first to drive it onto the trailer, but it is not a easy or quick release that could be used on the track.

Something practical to consider while planning the block out feature. The clutch could last longer if first gear can be used to drive it onto the trailer.

I used one for a while, it was ok with the gearing a little better than stock. I just drilled/tapped a hole in the rear of the shifter tower and put a bolt in that interfered with it going into 1st, not hard to do and permenent enough to please everyone.
