TOPEKA, Kan. (December 2, 2011) – Expanding from its inaugural season in 2011, Sports Car Club of America announced today the nine-race calendar for the 2012 BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Super Tour. Increased from six events in 2011, the schedule features one race in each of the SCCA’s geographic divisions.
BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour winners get commemorative checkered flags and a victory lap.
The BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Super Tour highlights some of the biggest events in each division, bringing with it extra features from a traditional National race weekend. The SCCA National staff provides media coverage of each of the events, and competitors and spectators will experience live timing access, victory laps for race winners, podium celebrations, and commemorative souvenirs and takeaways from each race.
With the first event scheduled for January 6-8 at Sebring International Raceway in the Southeast Division, the BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour will officially open the 2012 racing season on the first weekend of the new year.
“The first season of the BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour was a success for all involved,” Jeff Dahnert, SCCA President and CEO, said. “This year’s expanded schedule gives drivers in every division a chance to experience a Super Tour event and to be a part of the excitement that they bring to our schedule.
“In addition to being a can’t miss event in the Division, the expansion to nine events also makes it possible for drivers seeking top competition and a great weekend to travel to other Super Tours within a reasonable tow.”
The 2012 BFGoodrich Super Tour Schedule will consist of the following events:
Southeast Super Tour: January 6-8, Sebring International Raceway, Central Florida Region
Southwest Super Tour: March 9-11, Texas World Speedway, Lone Star Region
Midwest Super Tour: April 15-16, Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, Arkansas Valley Race Group
SoPac Super Tour: April 28-29, Buttonwillow Raceway Park, Cal Club Region
Northeast Super Tour: May 5-6, Summit Point Raceway, Washington DC Region
Great Lakes Super Tour: June 1-3, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Ohio Valley and Cincinnati Regions
Rocky Mountain Super Tour: June 30-July 1, High Plains Raceway, Colorado Region
NorPac Super Tour: July 13-15, Portland International Raceway, Oregon Region
CenDiv Super Tour: August 4-5, Blackhawk Farms Raceway, Blackhawk Valley and Milwaukee Regions
Each Super Tour weekend coincides with the qualifying event for the coveted SCCA Super Sweep award. The SCCA Super Sweep award includes a victory in one qualifying event, a Divisional Points Championship, the National Points Championship and a victory at the National Championship Runoffs® by a driver in the same class.
Drivers participating in Super Tour events will also earn bonus points toward the National point standings, regardless of finishing position, under SCCA rules. During typical SafeRacer National Racing Series events, bonus points are only awarded to drivers who also earn base points with a ninth-place or higher finish. The number of bonus points a driver can earn will still be capped at 10.
In the doubleheader events at Sebring, TWS, Hallett, Buttonwillow, Mid-Ohio, High Plains, and Portland, the second race will be designated as the Super Tour event and Super Sweep qualifier.
Last season, winners in six categories (Small Formula, Small Bore, Big Bore, Spec, Touring/Showroom Stock, and Big Formula/Sports Racing) were awarded prizes based on Club Racing National points awarded at the each of the Super Tour events. The 2012 prize package, courtesy of SCCA and BFGoodrich Tires, will be announced soon.
