level 2 head

Building a race motor and pitching the stock motor. Read all I could in the GCR before getting annoyed by the mess it is.

Can anybody tell me based off run off inspection if I can coat/polish my combustion chambers and exhaust runners?

And I know I can't add material to the head to fill the combustion chamber but is there any limit to what I can remove? I know I can remove all I dare from a level 1 chamber but these limited prep rules seem vague.

how is this vague?

The Cylinder Head can only be modified:
1. To install an alternate camshaft, and/or adjustable cam gears.
2. To port match on the port mating surface to a depth of no more than one inch.
3. To facilitate the installation of permitted alternate components, provided the modification serves no other function.
4. To achieve the maximum specified compression ratio by the machining of the deck surface.
5. To completely plug the holes resulting from the removal of EGR valves and air nozzles. The plugs must serve no other purpose.
6. To completely plug the stock fuel injection ports in the cylinder head, if the stock fuel injection is removed and carburetors are utilized. The plugs must serve no other purpose.
7. To utilize O-rings to replace or supplement a cylinder head gasket.
8. To fit valve seats. Valve seats are unrestricted. Valve seat angles are unrestricted. The valve seat insert can be no taller than one half inch.

so you can't touch anything in the combustion chamber because it's not in one of the 8 allowed modifications.

it doesn't matter what they check the rules say you can't

Nope, can't do any of that.

So none of the other information matters, just that tiny bit. Nothing from any other bits earlier in the GCR. Nothing like reading 800 pages for nothing for half a page of useful information. Thanks for clarifying.

The GCR is written in such a way that each class has multiple sections applicable to it. safety and race procedures are a "general" thing and covered for all classes at the front of the book. then you get to the individual classes, where each category (Production, Super Touring, GT, etc) has some general stuff covering the group.
THEN you get to the class-specific stuff. EP, FP, Level 1, level 2, etc. also note in Prod that you have some car-specific allowances.

If you're building an engine, you go straight to the spec line for that car and engine combination and look at that to see what's there, THEN you go back to the engine rules for EP/FP and build within those constraints.

The general premise for all of these classes is that "If It Doesn't Say You Can, Then You Can't." i.e. If the manual doesn't say you canport the head or lighten your crank, then you can't do it. don't try, don't ask for a rule change- unless its obvious and necessary. But after multiple years of running these cars, most of the omissions are sorted out..

If you're new to SCCA, then reading the entire 800 page rulebook was a PITA but something that should be done anyway- at least reading all of the general stuff and everything for your class. The sections for open wheel and GT? Skip.

.... What I do each time the rulebook comes out is that I strip my class specific info out of the 850 pages so I only have to open a small file of 30 pages or so when I'm looking for something. Makes it a lot easier to digest.

What Matt Said.

Come on, don't be so dramatic.

I don't know any rulebook from any organization that would scatter class-specific rules throughout its rulebook. I've never read the NASA Book, but I bet there's no PT stuff scattered in the GT stuff either.
