jsr dogbox

I can acquire a jsr dogbox for the sprite. I understand it was made by Jon Stamps Racing in GA. I have tried calling but do not get an answer. I am interested in finding out if parts or service are available for the gearbox or if I should just use the Taylor I am running now. I need to decide which one to keep.
thanks

I do not have a JSR box, but I have had all three generations of the Webster conversions, the Wheeler, Richmond, and Taylor, and the Taylor is by far the best. I would be interested in what is in the Stamps box. Initially I thought that he was doing something with the Jack Knight stuff out of England. If that is the case the first gear was not something you wanted to use on a regular basis, and the ratios are not easy to change. What do you expect to "fix" by going to the JSR box?

I understand Jon has retired and is living in FL, and no one took over his business.

I understood JSR gearboxes were a one-of-a-kind thing not easily serviced or duplicated.

That's what I heard.

My two cents,

I agree witgh Ron, the Taylor is the best one out there now. I have several customers using them and have the Richmond version in Sluggo. Have had experience with the factory straight cut and Jack Knight boxes and they simply do not measure up to the Taylor.

Being in the SouthEast, I ran against Jon Stamps in HP. I bought a JSR gearbox, which used dog-shifted gears but had a "cluster gear" similar to stock design so the ratios were not easily changed. Jon insisted it was not a Jack Knight but some repair parts had to come from England... I did end up having problems with the internal bearing between the input and output shaft- it used a stock needle bearing. It would fail, the shafts would skew and then it would jump out of gear. Tried several repairs with local machine shops and even by Taylor over several seasons, but they failed, too. Rick Taylor said the bearing was too small for the kick-out loads between the shafts. I ended up selling all the usable parts to a vintage racer who had one. Bought a Taylor then had to sell the car before I used it...
I would agree that the JSR box is probably not a good idea - unless it is really cheap and in great shape- because repairs/support are unlikely. Joel

Thanks for the quick and very helpful responses. I am using a Taylor I bought from Ron about 1 1/2 years ago. I installed it last year and blew my engine the first weekend. By the time I got a new engine, it was late in the season and I only had one weekend to try the new engine and "new" gearbox. I did take it to a track day last weekend to sort out the winter work. The Taylor seems to be working fine but we are getting some oil leakage from the front.

The JSR box is coming with a bunch of other parts I am acquiring. I didn't know much about it but thought I should learn more before I decide what to use and what to set aside. Sounds like I am much better off sticking with my Taylor.
