How much would you pay...

for a three day double national/Super Tour on the F1 course at Circuit of the Americas if we can do the deal?

Would it make a difference whether you came to the event or not if we ran the short course instead of the F1 course? I have one board member pushing for the short course. I need driver input to support the long course, unless he is right and it doesn't matter. Cost will be the same for either course.

Jerry,
Correct me, but the "short course" is not that short?? It's like 16-17 turns and how long?

I gotta believe that the price for renting the facility isn't any different whether you run one course or the other. Peters right, staffing that course is gonna be tough. You'll need lotsa bodies.

As for what I'd pay.....it's in TX and quite a schlep for me since I'm in MI. But anything over $600 for a DN would be a stretch. No matter what course it is. MidO was $550 and WG was similar for DNs.

If I was going to make the trip down to TX for a race on CoA, I would want to run on the same current course as F1. Where else could we say that? Isn't that one thing that makes this track special that we would pay extra for an event?

The only thing I can think of why not wanting to use the long course would be to save it for the possible Runoffs course but that does not prevent other clubs/group using this course and local drivers being able to get track time on the long course.

~$500-$600 ??
Obviously preferring the lower end of that but I think it might be worth it for that track. At least once anyway. It's a pretty good tow (about 1200mi.) from the East coast of Florida but I think I'd seriously consider it.

This might be a good race to do something I've thought more races should. Have a base entry fee and optional add ons. Sure "free" dinners and t-shirts are nice, and when the cost is spread over all entrants, they can be seen as cheap, but let me, the entrant, decide. Say $500 to enter the race, another $100 if you want do to the practice sessions on Friday, another $50 for the dinner, etc. To me that sounds like a $500 race, not a $650 one. You could even have a "deluxe" entry or something where you get everything for a discounted price. Lets us cheapskates be cheapskates, and folks who like it all have it too.

That said $600 seems like the top charged these days, double at Homestead was that (but we got posters and two dinners...).

Oh and see if you can avoid any track add-ons, camping, parking, pit vehicles etc. those suck.

I don't want to rain on anyones parade but, when I was on the BOD we looked into the Indy F1 course for the runoffs and Bernie would not allow it. Not sure if the same thing would happen here.

You wanna run where the F-1 cars ran, go to Watkins Glen. I don't get why you would want to pay more money just because a F-1 car used the track. I once walked (and actually relieved myself) on the sacred Notre Dame football field and again in the locker rooms didn't feel any different and I didn"t have to pay for either expierence.

2.8 or 2.3 depending on the final layout.

Jerry, post this on the "Chick" car site & you'll get the Buzz going.

One of the board members (the one that wants the short course) races them and is a member of that forum, I'm kinda waiting to see what he post there first.

Last comment first, COTA is first and foremost a for profit venture, Sorry but expect to be nickled and dimed. FYI at track parking for the F1 weekend starts at $200. And don't even think of bending or scratching their armco, you will be billed.

The negotiations are still proceeding so nothing, and I mean nothing not even a date, is close to being settled yet. As it stands now I would need 300+ cars at $600 to just break even.

Little more info. What we are looking at is a Friday (Hopefully) timed practice with about an hour (give or take) per race group on track. (The amount of time you get will depend on how well you stay on the track, of course.) Saturday and Sunday would be a 30 combined P&Q session for each group with the National race on Saturday and Super Tour on Sunday.

If those are the numbers....save your effort. I have no idea how many cars come to a 'normal' DN down there but I can't imagine that 300+ would be realistic. With big regions like Chicago, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Denver, etc. all over 1000 miles, I don't see a bunch of folks schlepping down there. It would cost me $1000 just to tow down and back. Add in a $600 entry, race fuel, hotel, meals, etc. and I'm staring a $2500 weekend. I can do three races up here for that.

While its a nice idea and I really wish you luck, I couldn't rationalize it.

What time of year are you trying to do this? I need to put in for vacation for 2013 soon.

Denver is only 924 miles. Figure I could get a jump for the 2014 Runoffs.

I just paid $525 for a double Rational in SOWDIV last weekend which is as cheap as it gets here for a 2.5 day. Friday test day was $150 full day/$75 half day and the weekend was $450. The RR next month at ECR is $450 for Sat/Sun and $150 Friday.

COTA I'd be willing to pay upwards of $750 given that a typical 3 day weekend in TX is about $600.

Put together a 6 hr Chumpcar/IT enduro. it will sell.
Really, see how much time may be open on sat PM. maybe Ican put on the Crap Can AM race. Or maybe we can split with Chumpcar, they are hot for this track and seem to have plenty of cash.
I know a guy, or 300.

I'd be in for $600 range, more if it included the test day. Of course I have a 3-4 hour tow. I agree with the sentiment that you will have a tough time getting 300 racers to show up. Now if the Runoffs move to Austin, then it's game on. Last time I filled up with diesel fuel it was right at $4/gal. It's really tough to plan on racers making 1000 mile trips at that price for fuel.

Our two weekends are normally the first weekend in March and Memorial day weekend. Because of the change in the dates for the convention to the first weekend we will have to move to the second weekend for 2013 which will be the 8th, 9th, 10th. That is the weekend we are scheduled to host the Super tour and the weekend that will most likely be in less demand for events at the track, and the weather is much more comfortable barring another monsoon. SO, that is the one we are hoping for.

The entry fee is not the only factor I look at... The cost of area hotels and fuel at the time will also be a factor. Now if the Runoffs visits there in 2014 I am sure a lot of us will make early season visits.
