Form Grinding

Could anyone on the forum direct me to a shop that can do form grinding? I need to have six flutes/keyways that are 60 degrees apart cut into a hardened/heat treated shaft 1 inch OD. Appreciate any information and thanks. Jerry

Any state-of-the art machine shop should have this capability, but it won't be cheap.

Try to google "form grinding".

Unsure of your location, but check your state's "Industrial Directory" for "form grinding". Should show many, by city.

In rereading your post, it now sounds like you're putting spline flutes on a shaft for a steering wheel or tranmission output yoke.

It would be cheaper to Electro Discharge Machine (EDM) the flutes. The carbon electrode can be Wire EDM'ed to shape and then burn the shape over the shaft. Less involved than dressing grinding wheels and indexing the shsft.

If the shaft is through hardened and is transmitting much power, expect premature failures. If the shaft is only case hardened to retain a ductile core, the flutes can be machined with carbide cutters.

Need better description of application to suggest appropriate machining method.

Find a l shop with a hob.

If its just 6 flutes that are straight rjs is right. Mill them. Unless the hardness is over 60 you can mill it easily.
