Experience with other radial slicks?

Anyone ever try "other" non-Hoosier radial slicks? I'm asking because, I just confirmed with Jeff at Hoosier that they won't be selling any 80 compound 17" slicks. You have to go up to 18s or down to 15s to get 80s.

Just wondering about Michelin, Avon, Pirelli, Yoko, etc...

Also where to buy takeoffs to try 'em.

Thanks in advance,

Not that it helps a ton, but I remember seeing Austin Snader on Michelins with his RX8. I think he was using 18x8 wheels.. Sucker was crazy fast if he could be smooth.

Thanks Joe.

Matt, are you sure Austin was on Michelins? I remember... well bridgestones or something.

I will say, you think Hoosiers are expensive... Youch.

The Avon's Collin was using are Bias ply's, not radials. Pretty sure the top 5 in GT3 at the runoffs were all on Avon Bias ply's.

Bill, I may be wrong there, but I coulda swore I saw the little blue Michelin logo on them. It's also quite possible he was using takeoffs from one of the local pro teams for that particular race..

Matt I don't remember either way. What I've read is that Michelins are the best, from those who I respect as drivers and who have actually tried yokos, bridgestones, etc.

Guess I'll find out.

FWIW, Austin had his RX8 for sale for $50K a few years ago. Don't know if he was expecting to get that much. I do know I met him the only time I went to the runoffs and he seemed like a good dude.

Yup.. The car is a retired Grand Am car if I remember correctly. I always loved the purple paint job- gorgeous car and well prepped. I usually only saw him twice in a race.. once when he was being towed past me on grid, and once during the race with about 3 laps to go when he lapped me. while sideways. on a straight. shooting fire out the exhaust. :applause:

Call Barndon Kraus at Roger Kraus Racing , not only very knowledgeable about race car setup , but also has experience with virtually all tyre (his spelling from dealing with Avon for quite a while!) manufacturers .He also from time to time has take off tires available. Please mention I sent you.

I'm running Pirelli PZero take offs from the PWC series. Some have even been new. I just picked up 8 before Nola. Now with the times I was running in the RX-8 I never stressed the tires, but I do like them better than the Hoosiers. At $100-150 each they are much better. Seriously, they do feel better on the car.
