Dinner With Racers Podcast

This is a podcast series that PWC and IMSA driver Ryan Eversley does with a friend, where they just have completely un-candid conversations with a bunch of random professional drivers, team owners, engineers, etc. in all different types of racing. It's pretty cool, and fun to listen to in the car or during a boring "at the desk all day" day:

This episode here should be especially interesting to all of us here, because it has to do with Scott Tucker, Level-5 Motorsports, and that one time when they built a D-Sports Racer for the 2011 Runoffs. I remember this car and how unbelievably insane it was on track, cause I was there. Many of you probably were too. If you've ever wondered what could be done if you basically had no rule book, a goal, and the absolute epitome of FUCKYOU money, you need to listen to this podcast. It's almost an hour long:

Once you've listened to it, immediately spend the rest of your life slapping any one you ever come across again from that day forward who says "But OMG I have a full-tilt program and it's impossible to go any faster than me!". No, you don't, and yes, you can.

Yeah,

Stupid F Y money made off the backs of his payday loan company. But what do you really know about Tucker the man? Check out what Google has to say:..

If you can in any way respect this guy or what he's done with "his" $$$, then you and I are cut from a different cloth. The Feds and Elizabeth Warren will make sure he gets "rewarded" for his past business practices. And knowing all of this why would anyone want to be caught in the same room with him doing an interview?

But that's just me.

Jay - you missed the point.

This isn't about Tucker, his dinero just happened to fund the project they discuss.

Good listen.

Some of the loose stories I've head about their West DSR development spending don't even come close to the real $$$ spent. Not an issue to Tucker because he F _ _ _ ed poor/dumb folks that aren't/weren't smart enough to understand high interest rates.

Many of us know at least one of the five folks talked about that were pi$$ed.

Oh I got it Chris.

I just know if some people watch the podcast not knowing what he is all about he will somehow be revered or respected for what he did. And I'm the first one to be fascinated with the outrageous nature of the accomplishment!

The rest is obvious to the casual observer.

Why bother with such things when grandiose passive-aggressive posturing can be done instead?

The linked podcast isn't about Tucker himself, his shady business dealings, or any opinions of him as a human being. It has everything to do with what went into that racing program and the development of quite possibly the most insane racecar I've ever seen, let alone in club racing, as told by one of the main guys who ran that program for Level-5. Jay would know this, had he actually listened to it. Purely as a racer, car builder, and mechanical engineer myself, I found it thoroughly interesting! Now debates over where the money came from to fund this project, and the social, economic, and ethical issues that surrounded that, I'll leave that to "the intellectuals" in vastly different forums.

Shady dealings or not, I wanna say he was the first SCCA guy to break the 2 minute barrier at RA, right?

That lends a lot of credence to the mantra, " How fast do you want to go, how much do you want to spend?".

Yep. That's what the whole story was about. Literally millions spent on a DSR just to make Runoffs 2012 and break 2:00.
The test driver was running 1:52s in it on a test day, while tucker 'only' eeked out a 1.59 during the race. But it still broke the 2:00 mark.

I watched that DSR race from turn 6 in awe. Absolutely amazing.
I watched it from Canada Corner. It was doing ~170mph before it even came into view, damn near 190 into the braking zone (at like the 2!), hauled ass through the corner, and then took off like a rocket up to 13.....amazing.

Here's the in-car video that was referenced in the podcast, of both the simulator and the real life lap from Colin Braun:

the onboard data in video seems to indicate 175-176 top speed and not quite flat thru the carrousel. but still damn fast of course. I think the audis were doing times in the mid 1:40's back in the day? not sure though...

Technically that honor goes to Mark Donohue since SCCA ran the Can-Am series back in the day and Mark turned a 1:57.x back in '73

But Tucker was the first to do it in 'Club Racing' and it's pretty amazing that a somebody could do it with an engine that was nine times smaller (600cc vs 5.4L) than the Can-Am 917-30K!
It took CART 11 years to eclipse Mark's time and by CART's heyday they got down to 1:39.X and they would take the kink flat at around 175.

Oh my,

It appears that the wise man that said "what goes around, comes around" actually knew what he was talking about.

When the last song plays the only thing you have left is your personal honor and reputation. Scott must have thought that these are things he could purchase with some pocket change. He never guessed he wouldn't be wearing any pants.

And Kevin,

You're right.........I didn't watch the podcast. Half of me desperately wanted to.........the other half that wouldn't give the time of day to sociopath Tucker et al pounded the engineer half into submission.

I'm pretty comfortable with that outcome.

And Jay,
Your gold star is in the mail. Be careful up there on your perch.

(BTW, a podcast is something you listen to, and this is still a really cool one if you're into insane racecar building and engineering. It has absolutely nothing to do with Tucker except for the source of the funding for the project, which is an entirely different conversation.)

Despite my distaste for Tucker, it was a fascinating listen. I guess my car in not "fully developed". WOW. I've listened to a bunch of the "Dinner with Racers" podcasts and have enjoyed them.

I agree that the Dinner with Racers podcasts are enjoyable. I'm having a hard time rationing them out, but I don't want to run out too soon. :D
