DCOE questions

I’m finally getting to finishing up the DCOEs on my 850 and I have a couple questions.

Are the start / choke devices necessary, or can/should I remove them? One of the Weber sites offer a blank cover to go over the space. If I remove those do I remove the piston and spring assy also?

Thank you,
L

I never used them when I ran DCOEs on my Mini. I think that we just left them in but I don't exactly remember.

Larry,

Just make blanking plates and cover them without removing the plungers and springs.

Another race-prep tip is to tap (6x1.00mm) the ports that come from the starter/choke mechanism and plug the hole with a metric 6x1.00 mm set-screw. Then just peen over the edge of the hole after you install the set screw to keep it from backing out. I also used Red Loctite on the threads.

This is the hole located right behind the butterfly at about a 45º angle up to the choke/starter mechanism. If you don't do this, the starter/choke plunger & spring assembly can and will vibrate open at higher RPM, letting in un-metered fuel into your intake manifold and it will drive you nuts trying to figure out why one cylinder is running richer than the other 3!!

Takes about 10 minutes and will save you a lot of headaches later. Ask me how I know!!

Hey Larry,

Just a lot of chasing my tail trying to sort out the A/F ratios on the car vs. what the plugs looked like. Didn't happen every session, the A/F ratios didn't always respond to jet changes like I expected, etc.

Finally occurred to me what was going on and plugging the starter ports fixed it!

Good luck!
