Daytona Gearing Info (Alternate Rods)

Trying to figure out gearing for Daytona, for a good FP/HP setup. I guess I would like to know the slowest MPH and what turn that is and is the slowest MPH thru the bus stop chicane. Thanks in advance.

Maybe this will get this thread to 22 pages.Trying to figure out gearing for Daytona, for a good FP/HP setup. This is where I put a silly smiley face if could figure it out.

Gearing my FP Honda for around 140. ITS cars get to that in the draft. That is my best guess for top speed.

Here is a video of two very well prepped and driven ITS cars. Both were under the track record. 2:14ish.

Maybe a little under 50mph at the Horseshoes. My low tech, lean, Golf hit about 128 and I hope to go a bit faster with the new Sciroccos. Mid 30s may get it done.

In an HP or FP car the bus-stop should be a brake application, one-gear downshift and stand on the gas kind of thing. No where near the slowest turn on the track.

 Just like that.

Chuck, I have several videos I've taken from there over the years but only one that's I've uploaded. Nothing special though. At any rate, from memory the slowest turn there would be the first horseshoe (turn 3) and I think I'm at around 45 mph at turn-in. The second horseshoe is slightly faster but not much, depends on the line you take going in. The bus stop, I can't find any of my data on this computer but I'm pretty sure my turn-in speed there is about 70-75, maybe more.

Not sure where anybody else is getting to top speed wise  but getting over 130 in an HP car there going to be tough to do, even in a draft. I've been going there for over 30 years and have never exceeded it in a CRX. Even on the fastest lap I ever ran there (using the draft in a few places) I think I only got to 127-128 on that lap. Heard lots of 'stories' :liar: though!

Oooh, ooh! I know!

Chuck, I ran the VWMS gearset with 3.67 R&P and 20" tires. Used 2nd gear in the first horseshoe. 3rd gear in second horseshoe and turn 6 (entry onto banking). Bus stop is high 4th gear, quick shift into 5th at exit. Trioval was 7700 RPM w/ GP motor. 8300RPM through trioval in FP trim.

Hope that helps.

GP lap record holder at Daytona....lol....

Thanks for the info. I have a 4sp and need to figure 2nd gear with my final drive ratio and work foward from there.

Chuck, Not sure of the speeds but I can tell you that at my last race with stock MK1 GTI gearing and 13" rims on bias plys, I was way undergeared. My shift light would come on in 5th just as I came off the banks in Nascar 3 and 5. Had to pump the throttle the whole way down the straight. Definitely not the fast way around.

NASCAR 5? is that where the beer is?

They can run a better gearing for the slow stuff and wind out the straight a couple hundred more rpm.

How can that be an advantage ?
