Action Cam HD video camera

Jay,

Go to ebay and type in "808 keychain".

There are some scammers on ebay, so be sure to check feedback very carefully. The ones that ship from overseas take weeks to arrive.

Also bear in mind the limitations of these little cameras (and there are many).

But ... they're cheap and kind of fun.

nb: I'm not saying the action cam is an 808 camera. I'm just listing a cheap alternative.

I have used the Pro camera with about a 50% success rate. Sometimes it just shuts itself off. Video is pretty good otherwise. Anyone using the Contour GPS successfully? It might offer a mini data acquistion capability but not sure if the sample rate and goggle maping functions are a match for road racing.

I recently bought a Contour GPS camera and have only used it on my motorcycle. The video is great and it has GPS tracking with elevation and speed. You can by a bluetooth card for the camera that will sinc with an iPhone app for aiming and changing the type of recording, 1080p 30 f/s-720P 60 f/s, etc.

I can't wait to try it in the racecar.

I've used mine on my CBR back and forth to work at both 1080 30 f/s and 720 60 f/s and the video is great. I've also had it on the front of my truck and used the goggle mount on my belt when I've gone hiking. My only concern will be if it can pick up the GPS inside the car.

Like any camera, the mount is the most important thing. I bought a Ram Mount for my motorcycle and it's great. I was surprised how stable it was even on a sport bike.

I talked to PED yesterday and they agreed to forward the user manual to me. If they do that should be useful.

he promised it last night....I promise......so it's 1 day late right now..................never a good sign.

I guess I'm just too much of a pessimist. Here's the note I just got from Vince of PED:

Jay,

Sorry it took me some time to get back to you. I have placed the instructions on the website; go to the ActionCam HD page and under the Download tab you will see a pdf document of the instructions to the camera.

Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

Records audio as well. Somebody buy one of these and let us know how it works!

Other cool things about it:
* you can use it as a skype computer camera
* you can set it up to run continuous loops in your street car.........in case somebody does something stupid to you.

Have you been able to get the battery in an MD80 to last that long?

I have not. Mine last about 30-45 minutes at most.

I've had no problem getting the full card recorded IF, I start with a fresh charge. If I charged it the night before it won't last. If I take it off the charge just before using it then it will last. I usually leave it plugged in the USB port of the laptop after I down load the card and take of before heading to the grid.

For the less technically sophisticated among us, what is the difference between the two versions of the ActionCam? The HD is .Mov, and the High Res version is .Avi. I recently tried to use an HD Flip camera as an in-car, and the files were so big they wouldn't play continuously. Not very knowledgeable about this AV stuff...

.mov and .avi are just different multimedia formats that were created to store video data. .mov was actually developed by Apple and .avi, also called audio video interleave, was developed by Microsoft. True HD and High Resolution video by their nature, produce pretty large files. Also, not all video players support every format. It depends on how the data was encoded.
