I registered, and I'm still keeping a glimmer of hope, but the chances of me being there are looking less every day. The fact that they moved T1 back into our group makes it a little easier to take. I know that they have been part of our group for the last few years, but I still think that there are better ways to even things out.

Craig

I know what you mean Craig. I was on the fence about running the Cal Speedway Double Rational. When I saw T1 was in a different group, I decided to register. Then they switched T1 back in group 2. I contacted Cal Club about it and John Snow told me they did it because a couple T1 cars were double dipping in GT1 and TI and were trying to qualify for the Runoffs. I am disappointed that takes precedent over safety. On top of that I see only one GT1 registered.

For the most part the T1 drivers know what they are doing but that is such a competitive class that some of them take risks that put us all danger. They are kind of like an ultra fast SM group. I have had too many close calls with T1 cars trying to out brake me from behind only to overshoot the corner, or be totally out of control while staying on course ending up slowing us both down.

I told John that I would see how Saturday goes and if they are any incidents with T1, I will just bail out for Sunday. We have already had one HP car taken out because of a TI driver error, I don't want to be the second to be taken out. I would rather be on course with GT1 cars, being on slicks they have similar cornering speeds. Even though the closing speeds are greater with GT1, I have never felt endangered running with them. GT1 are usually predictable, T1 are not.

Not that I want to make a hot day run even longer, but if you can convince them to move us to Group 4 with GT1 we are for it - if that helps keep you and Craig in the game.

T1 does not bother me, its the clowns in Spec Pinata Light (SM in STL) that cant get down the strait without running into each other that I don't want to share the track with.

Jason, The request has been sent. Do you think Jennifer will fit in Group 4?

Craig, I hope you are good to go on this request to move to Group 4. We will still have fast cars flying by us but it will be fewer if this request is accepted.

She will be fine, she used to race a FV, so getting passed is not something new.

The only reason I registered is because they moved the T1 cars to your group and out of group four.
I wonder about the safety issues too, but, for sure, it's no fun running with those cars.

You did it:

Hello all,

The stewards received a request to move HP from group 2 to group 4 and it has been granted. So as of today June 6, 2012 HP will be in Group 4

See you all there.

That really looks like a fun track, I wish that trip was in the budget this year, but with so many Nationals in our Division its hard to justify traveling. I guess its a good problem to have.

Neil, I didn't realize they were having a National at Sonoma this year. I thought SF Region gave up on Nationals. If they have another next year I may come up for it. That is a fun track but I think I like Laguna Seca a little better.

You should be able to to well at Cal Speedway if you got some tall gears.

With the advent of the Rational, Sears Point is back on the calendar with National points to be had. It's one of my favorite tracks along with Laguna Seca. I haven't been to either in 10 years. If I don't make it to High Plains for the Super Tour, I'm shooting for Sonoma as a back up plan.

Fun weekend. I really liked running with the GT cars (not sure how they felt about us), with braking and corner thresholds being much more similar than when we run with SS/T I never felt like we were holding each other up.

Saturday things appeared to be going downhill from the start of the first practice... Rich Garver (HP Toyota Corolla) stopped on track about half way around on the first lap. Turned out the throttle cable had just popped off and he was able to get back out for qual and the race. Gary Wittman (HP AH) had a failing clutch in practice. He loaded up and headed for his shop, it was a long shot but he was going to try and replace and make it back for the race. Thinking there was no chance of Wittman making it back for the race I decided to save my good tires. Of course as we get the first call to grid he pulls in. Next time I need to pull a trans I am calling him. Wittman still had to unload the car and get in, we were out on the pace lap as he took to the track, he ended up taking the green well behind the field and never had a chance to catch up for a proper battle. I won HP, taking Wittman's old track record away in the process. My wife Jennifer, who was running her first Club Race in over 15 years, drove the 2012 Yaris and won the HP Regional race over Garver.

Wayne Graham won EP in his Mazda, he was flying. Roger Karlson took 2nd in his Elva.
I guess Brian Linn had better things to do, leaving James Whitton to run uncontested in FP.

Sunday qual, Wittman came back with a vengeance, got the pole with a lap under the record I had set the day before - we were going to have a race. 8) Wittman and I mixed it up for a bit on the opening laps, then I managed to get a particularly frustrating SP Camaro between us - this guy was dumping fluid out of his car all weekend, thought he was racing everyone, and had way more power than talent - this allowed me to get a gap on Wittman he could not come back from. A spring change I made between qual and the race and fresh set of Hoosier radials really helped in the slow turns, and I dropped the track record a bit more on the way to the win. Wittman eventually freed himself of the SP car and came home second. Jennifer steadily gained confidence during the weekend, and by Sunday she was lapping quicker than Jamie Bestwick did in the car at the January race (which was also his first time in the car). :applause:

Graham took the EP class on Sunday, with Karlson again in 2nd.
Whitton was the only FP again.

It was extremely frustrating being stuck behind that "more power that talent" SP Camaro. I could pass him in a couple of the corners but could not get far enough ahead to keep him from passing me again under power only to block me again on most of the corners. He got plenty of hand signals from me but I think he just thought I was giving him a point by. He finally missed a corner so bad that he could not catch back up to me. Jason was long gone by then and I was not gaining any.

After looking at your times Jason, I think it is an understatement that you dropped the track record a bit more. Your fastest time was a second faster than the old GP lap record which was 2 seconds faster than the old HP record. That new transmission seems to be really working for you.

I think that -50lbs might have helped you a bit, you were only .5 off of the GP record, and 1.7 under your old HP record.

Funny things is I only picked up about .2sec at Buttonwillow with the new trans. :ask:
